Hello fellow Cranes! Cranes?! Did you know that SNU's mascot is a Crane? I surely didn't, but your welcome for the information. I am honored to educate and fill your brains with the most interesting, irrelevant facts you need to know. Anyway, this will be the final post on the current series. What better way of wrapping up the series on "Staying in Korea" with an alumni of the most recent ISI class, the loveable Nari Yang. Check out what she had to say
PL: 안녕나리. Lets start positive. What is something good that has happened to you within the last week!
NY: I whent to 영주 and 단양 with muy friends. I got to see places I didnt know existed in Korea (i.e. caves) It was really fun.
PL: Caves? Never knew caves existed too. I definitely need to check it out next time. Onto my next question, what's your best memory of your SNU ISI stay in Korea?
NY: Basically it was the people I got to meet and the places I got to go with them, the opportunity I got to build really good memories with them.
PL: What do you like to do for fun? Any interesting talents?
NY: mm... talents... not really. Since I got to Korea I've been walking a lot, to see different places...so I would say walk? and I love to go to random coffe shops, Korea has some really cute places, though I don't drink coffe...I love the pastery!
PL: Are you sure random coffee shops shouldn't be random bars? haha just kidding. What are you in Korea for? Why'd you choose to continue studying in Korea?
NY: I'm in SNU as as exchange student (political science and International Relations), I will be here until the start of January 2012... I decided to come back because I still need to work on my Korean, and well to be honest... I did have a really good time in SNU ISI so I had to come back and re-live the days :D I think 1 month was just not enough for me. It is the first time coming to Korea to study and actually live for more than 3 months, so it has been like living in a different world by myself, everything very exciting and new.
PL: What is a typical day like for you?
NY: Wake up really late... go to class, then I go out to grab something to eat.. I hate being in my dorm by myself... sometimes I just stay in my 동방 and hang arround with my friends, but lately because of finals, I've been studying all night.. and afternoon
PL: Best and worst thing about living in Korea? Any favorite places to go? Any tips or words of wisdom to fellow ISI'ers who are considering or will stay in Korea for an extended stay like you?
NY: Well to be honest the only thing I miss form Colombia are my family and friends and the meat.... yeah.. the meat I really want Carne Asada... so I guess if you plan to come to Korea there will be things you will miss. Also you may find at first korean ajummas and ajussis to be quite rude... but if you stay open minded you will have a great time, ISI was really fun, I learned a lot. Places to go....I would say there is hongdae, shichon, itaewon, and gangnam for the night.. myungdong, dongdaemun for shopping.. and many historical sites... like the national museum, various palaces. Believe me, in Korea you may spend a really great time if you are with the right people and have a very open mind on everything. its really fun to take 1 or 2 days and go around the whole subway... because there are some really interesting shops in the subway stations.
PL: Plans for this summer...
NY: I am looking forward for the summer, because with my friends I will be walking from one side of Korea to another (대장전), it will be very interesting. I've never been a huge fan of walking from one place to another, but because it's by the sea side I like the idea.. it's definitely something I wouldn't do by myself or in Colombia. Im really happy I get the chance to travel (by foot) with friends and get to know places (like little towns).
PL: I hope it doesn't get too hot and the weather cooperates! Here's the last question. Fast forward 10 years, where will you be?
NY: I wish I could stay Korea... but I really don't know.. probably Colombia or Korea... yeah I don't know.
PL: Thank you for your time Nari. Good luck with your finals and wish you a great time and experience with your friends on your walk across Korea.
